Helping the AMA Foundation tell it's story

The AMA Foundation faced a significant challenge in telling its story and making the impact of its programs better known. To address this issue, the organization turned to Lexicon Strategies Partner, Ryan Roemerman, an expert in creating equity and social impact, to help create a strategic plan that would advance the foundation's health equity goals.

Over the course of eight months, Lexicon Strategies used an evidence-based, mixed-methods research model to get to the heart of what key stakeholders envisioned and what the organization needed. The result was a comprehensive and measurable plan that has the potential to transform the foundation's approach to health equity.

One of the key challenges facing the AMA Foundation was the lack of awareness of its programs. Most people were unaware of the important work that the foundation was doing to improve health outcomes in the United States. To address this issue, Lexicon Strategies used a data-driven approach to help the foundation better understand the needs of its stakeholders. Through an extensive review and analysis of past environmental scans, sustainability audits, strategic and implementation plans, and other documents, as well as interviews and feedback from key stakeholders, Ryan was able to develop a clear and shareable logic model for creating meaningful change.

The resulting plan includes measurable outcomes and instruments to evaluate performance against the goals, with the Board of Directors unanimously approving the plan in May 2022. The plan's clarity allows the staff to immediately begin implementation with the help of an accompanying implementation plan. In addition, an easy-to-use and easy-to-understand dashboard for staff and board allows for better communication and guidance.

For the first time ever, the strategic plan also includes a marketing and communications goal with clear objectives to ensure that the AMA Foundation can tell its story both quantitatively and qualitatively. KPIs were developed to review existing platform offerings and alumni databases, and methods were established to implement, collect, synthesize, and evaluate best practices from awarded institutions and SMEs who receive fellowships.

A decision matrix was also developed to help the AMAF deploy funds with clear goals to further strengthen existing partnerships and programs.

The result is a blueprint for the foundation's future efforts to improve the nation's health, and one that has the potential to make a significant impact on health care equity in the United States.
